DataCamp

DataCamp.com is the flipped classroom environment for this set of course materials.

You can access DataCamp materials in one of two ways:

  1. If you are teaching a class, you can request free, premium access to DataCamp for you and your students.  I initially gained access for my research laboratory, without an official, structured class, so they seem to be pretty lax about determine what a “class” is.  But your mileage may vary.  You can make your classroom request using this link.
  2. If you are self-paced, you will need to pay for access.  Fortunately, it’s pretty cheap as far as online courses go.  To gain intermediate expertise in R, which is a great goal to start with, expect you’ll need to complete courses and material here for 13 weeks (1 semester) at an intense (10-12 hours per week) pace, 26 weeks at a relaxed pace (5-6 hours per week), or a year at a part-time pace (2-3 hours per week).

If you self-taught R and are worried about teaching programming formally, don’t sweat it.  One of the biggest advantages to teaching a class like this is that you will learn a lot of techniques that you didn’t know about and improve your own coding skill dramatically in the process. That is a win-win for both you and your students.
